Section I: Proposal
Proposal
For the topic of my I-Search Paper I chose to focus on food. I wanted to discuss the processes that our food goes through today and why it is bad and could even be harmful to people. Also I wanted to discuss another option opposed to regularly heavy processed food which would be organic food.
I became interested in this topic after watching a documentary called Food Inc. in my English Composition 100 class. Personally I thought I knew a decent amount about where my food came from before watching the movie but was completely shocked about how wrong I was when the movie was over. I considered myself an informed person before watching Food Inc. which leads me to believe that most people have absolutely no clue what goes into their food. I chose this topic to explore further about what goes into my food and to look at if organic and natural options are truly better for you. I also wanted to figure out if average people could even sustain living on organic food since it is so expensive.
To research this topic I mainly used google to look up information on certain topics. I searched words like organic, GMO free, Pesticides, E. coli and more. These searches brought me to different websites with more information. I also used websites that I had used from earlier projects and knew were reliable. These websites were Mayoclinic.org and Helpguide.org.
Aside from just researching on the internet about this topic I also wanted to do some first hand research. I wanted to see if an average family could afford the higher cost of living off of organic food and the only real way I saw fit to do so is go out and try buying each. I decided I would spend about fifty dollars buying food that my family would usually buy each week which is not organic, but also buy fifty dollars’ worth of organic food. Once I did this I would see how far I could stretch my dollar with both. Based on what I was able to buy I would see if it is affordable or not to buy organic food.
