Section II: Process
Process
For my I-Search Paper I used a similar research method that I usually do for papers. During research I used google to look up certain terms that pertained to my topic. Once searching these terms I would try to find a website that was reliable from the thousands of hits I would get. After thirteen years in school I by now know a few websites that would be useful in research so I also visited some of those. Finally I also did some research in supermarkets on my own. This is not what I usually do but was a fun and very informative twist to my usual research methods.
Google sometimes can to brought of a search engine and give you really unreliable sources but with this project I was lucky enough to find some really helpful websites. Google brought me to the EPA website which gave me a lot of helpful info and many more. Websites that I have used in the past are mayoclinic.org and helpguide.org. In both of these websites I was able to search for things like why is organic food better or is organic food right for you. These websites also went into detail about pesticides and GMO’s, talking about where they came from and what they are intended for. The information I gathered from all of these websites that I visited I would copy and paste to a blank word document. Then I would also copy and paste the URL of the website and put it above the information so I knew where it was coming from. This is helpful so I end up with a page of great information that I can cite in my paper. I can also easily refer back to the page I got the information from in case of any questions.
The final way I did research was to shop for organic food and for regular every day food that my family would buy on a weekly basis. This was out of the norm of research that I would usually do but it was actually really fun! I went to giant and spent fifty dollars on food my family usually would buy. Then I went into the all natural and healthy section which I have never ventured into before and spent fifty dollars there to see what I was able to get. Since my family shops for the best deals instead of the healthiest foods I have never looked at what this section had before. Usually I would walk past and think nothing of it but now I was looking through everything. There were a lot more options than I thought there would be. After I went through the shelves at giant I proceeded to The Fresh Market, which is a grocery store with great all natural and organic selections. I have never been inside this store because of the high prices but now was my chance! It was a lot different than your average supermarket but I was able to get great organic deals. Even though it is a deal everything was still expensive.
I believe doing this type of research, where I went out and experienced something new on my own was the most helpful. I would have to say this taught me the most and opened my eyes to new experiences. It was also very enjoyable to come home with all of these new food options and share them with my family. To my surprise doing this actually got them very interested in the topic as well and led them to learn new things as well. Not only was I able to get some great research for my essay but I was also able to introduce my family to healthier food and organic options.
